Aikido “The Way of Harmony” Aikido:a traditional Japanese martial art that was developed in the early part of this century by Morihei Ueshiba (1883-1969). Head Suginami Boulder instructor Vajra Granelli was first introduced to Aikido when he was 9 years old. For over the last 12 years he has been a student of James Friedman and Peter Ralls. Vajra has trained at Suginami Aikikai San Francisco and has made many trips to Japan to study at Suginami Aikikai Tokyo with Kato sensei and Hombu Dojo Tokyo. He has traveled throughout the world studying and teaching Aikido. Vajra received his third degree black belt from James Friedman and Peter Ralls Sensei at Suginami Aikikai San Francisco. During his time at Suginami Aikikai SF, Vajra was able to learn from many of the world's highest ranking Aikido instructors hosted by the dojo (including Kato Sensei, Nishio Sensei, Anno Sensei, C. Tissier Sensei, P. Hendricks Sensei, Sugawara Sensei, Terry Dobson Sensei, K. Cottier Sensei, and Bookman Sensei). In 2014 Suginami Aikido Boulder became an official branch dojo of Suginami Aikikai SF, with an official connection to the world Aikido headquarters - Hombu Dojo in Tokyo, Japan. Over the last 25 years Vajra has worked as a trainer, fighter, coach, and corner man in the world of combat sports.
Vajra’s approach to teaching is based on old school aikido mat drills, movement and angle of attack strategies and mindfulness training concepts. This mix of old and new concepts provides an approach to training that will optimize both mental and physical performance. He stresses that regular training and consistent practice in these techniques can increase the integration between mind and body. In 2013 Vajra worked with Friedman Sensei and Bookman Sensei to release the Aikido DVD “ Aikido outside the box”.
