"Be the Change" at Bishop Kelly is a JR /SR mentoring and relationship building program with incoming freshman and new students. Our mission is to develop the whole student:mind, body and spirit. Through a diverse and comprehensive education in the Catholic tradition, students prepare themselves to serve God and others in the world community. As part of our effort to insure the sanctity and worth of each student, we implemented the “Be the Change Program” at Bishop Kelly. While this secular program started in California to reduce gang tensions in problem schools, it is a very effective program in all schools at changing behaviors. We annually bring in a team that facilitates a Challenge Day for a large group of students. This is a powerful experience that ends with an open microphone and each student is given an opportunity to voluntarily take time to apologize to those they have mistreated or verbalize their commitment to inclusion at Bishop Kelly. The Challenge Day “Be the Change” program has provided Challenge Day opportunities for all students at Bishop Kelly. Follow-up protocols at the school keep the program active throughout the year. We have facilitated the Challenge Day program with a freshman family structure to initiate community building between the classes. The freshman class is divided into 24 families with 48 junior-senior Challengers and 8 faculty members being responsible for the monthly meetings. The twenty-four freshman student “families” led by upper class Challengers meet monthly with their family in a pull-out program from their English or Theology classes. The freshman families are organized and initial introductions are made during the freshman orientation at the beginning of the school year. The Challengers guide the freshman through the orientation and registration process prior to the first day of school. The monthly meetings provide time and structure for discussing issues that range from academics, homecoming to social issues affecting teens today. Relationship building among the family members is encouraged during the normal course of the day in between the scheduled family meetings.
In 2011-2012 we greeted the Class of 2015 and parents at a Challenger hosted convocation at the Carley Center. The program has made considerable contributions to the positive climate at Bishop Kelly but in building relationships which is the backbone of the program, there is an ongoing process, 'it is not the destination but the journey' which matters. We continue on this journey. The program continues to flourish and evolve as we continue our efforts in providing a safe, secure and inclusive environment at Bishop Kelly for all students.
