Since 2002, Kochan & Phillips Historical Textiles have been producing accurate reproduction textiles for period costume and upholstery. Museum-Quality, Reproduction 18th and 19th Century Woolen Cloth
for Military, Trade, and Domestic Usage

Background:Nearly thirty years ago, I made the acquaintance of Sean Phillips, an Englishman whose family had been involved in the Yorkshire woolen trade for generations. Both of us had been independently doing primary-source research on the cloth being produced and used for military and civilian dress of the period. Each of us had in mind the wish to produce quality woolen cloth that was equal in weave, milling, finish and hand to the original cloth samples and clothing artifacts that we had examined in numerous museums, archives, and private collections. After a lapse of some eight years, Sean and I decided to pool our research, locate a mill that had the machinery, expertise, and willingness to embark on specialized projects of this nature and finally get such woolen cloth back into production.
With Sean’s strong contacts in the Yorkshire textile industry, we finally located a mill that had been in operation for nearly 200 years and was willing to work with us and produce cloth weaves, finishes and dyes to our specifications. Our cloth is not commercially available melton remarketed to the reenactor market as “historic” (as done by a well-known mill in Leeds and another mill in Canada—both of which also have a synthetic blend of 15-25% in their melton cloth), but correct reproduction cloth that starts with custom-produced yarn from old breed sheep (no merino), in order to achieve the correct cloth. Our Yorkshire mill is now engaged in a sole-source production agreement with us, Sean serving as our European distributor and I handling North American sales. In 2002, we introduced our first woolen broadcloth, based on original samples and specifications for British and French military coatings of the 18th and early 19th centuries, but also suitable for naval and civilian clothing. Since then, we have added kersey (a heavy, well-milled, twill weave cloth), superfine broadcloth for genteel civilian and officer-grade clothing, lining bays (baize), serge, milled bays and serge, glazed shalloon, swanskin, and bearskin to our line of superior reproduction woolens and worsteds. New cloth lines currently under research and development include blankets, tartan, satinets, camblets and callimancoes. JLK

Specifications:Both our broadcloth coatings, kersey, and bays are made in 6/4 width (54 in. wide) per yard, as did the original cloth produced for the army during the 18th and early 19th century. The broadcloth coatings weigh approximately 26 oz. per running yard and are of plain-weave as per British Army specs of the period. The kersey is 22-23 oz. per running yard are woven in a 2/2 twill. Both types of cloth are heavily napped and well-milled, using specially-produced yarn, and feature the hard “hand” that was characteristic of such cloths during the period. The coating and kersey both hold a cut or “raw” edged without raveling. It is the cloth used by museums and leading historical tailors (such as Henry Cooke, Steve Abolt, Joel Bohy) and has been adopted by many French & Indian War, Revolutionary War and War of 1812 “progressive” living history units. It is available either wholesale or retail. Current colors include French royal blue and brown (for “Lottery coats”), British royal blue, madder red, buff, grass green, bottle (rifle) green, deep indigo (navy) blue, natural white, mock scarlet and our newest line, mixed grey. Special runs of other correct historical colors can be run by special arrangement--quantity orders only.
