As stewards of the land, every decision we make is dedicated to improving the land for future generations. We strongly believe what is best for the land will also be a solid long-term business model for our farm and grow food to nourish the generations to come.
2013 was our first growing season. We grew over forty types of vegetables and cut flowers for market, and raised pastured meat, eggs, and milk for our own family. In 2013, we seeded perennial pasture for grass- based egg and meat production. In 2014, we will run multi-species animals (pigs, cattle, sheep, and poultry) in an intensive-grazing-pasture system. We are deeply committed to feeding animals a natural diet and raising them on pasture.
We look forward to adding many exciting foods to our farm in the coming years. Short term goals include year round grazing (on stockpiled forage in the winter months), seasonal management intensive grazing on our pasture, and using no-till, minimal till, bio-dynamic, cover crops, and intensive management in our market garden. In 2014 we will plant fruit trees for our family and begin preparing land for a five acre permaculture orchard and perennial garden to be planted in 2015-16.
There were no trees on our farm when we moved onto it last summer and we have planted a few but we have plans for many, many more trees. Someday we hope to run pigs in a woodlot, offer a winter csa of greens and storage vegetables, a fruit csa, water cattle from ponds and offer them shade with silvopasture, utilize no-till methods for both pasture and garden, and power the farm with wind and solar energy.
Creating an economically solvent, sustainable, diverse family farm is not a task we intend to take on alone. Our goals are big enough to foster meaningful partnerships to reach our goals. We actively seek out partnerships in our community.
We are planting the seeds for our farm now and look forward to seeing them realized in the years, decades, and generations to come.
